it may sound quite weird, but emmett's best memory would be the day he almost got killed by a grizzly bear. the best part has nothing to do with the hurt and pain he felt as the bear, but rather everything that happened afterwards. when rosalie found and carried him to carlisle, emmett found himself thinking that was an angel sent down from heaven to bring him to God. of course, the truth was far from that, but in his mind it was possibly the best thing that ever happened to him. it brought him to rosalie, with whom he has been more than happy with for the past few decades.

emmett's worst memory would have to be the day his younger sister, grace died. though the memory has blurred a lot in his mind over time, the sound of her screaming voice is still a sound that emmett finds himself hearing often. when grace died, emmett lost not only a sister, but a best friend as well, and it simply added more and more to the pain that had built up in his heart.

Emmett McCarty was born in Nashville, Tennessee on a rainy March Tuesday in 1915. He was the seventh of eight children and the third of three boys born in the back-country. Born four years after the last child before him, Emmett was always the odd one out, so he spent most of his time with his younger sister, Grace. Gracie adored her big brother, and Emmett worshiped the ground on which she walked and swore never to let her come to any harm. They often wandered deep into the woods to play, returning home covered in mud to earn a stern scolding from their mother, Candace.

George McCarty was a hunter, and his sons would follow in his footsteps. Emmett wanted to prove that he could keep up with his elder brothers, who scorned him, and worked hard to learn the trade. It was not long before Emmett was dragging in larger game than his father. He did himself no favors among his older siblings, but he wasn't looking for their approval; as long as he had Grace, he was happy. Emmett was happy most of the time, to tell the truth. He didn't see any point in wasting his energy on being upset over what he didn't have, choosing instead to appreciate what he did have, just as Candace often stressed.

When Grace died, Emmett was heartbroken, having lost his best friend and baby sister. He began to hunt bigger and bigger game for something to do, getting a thrill out of the danger, and it was this that was both his undoing and his saving. In 1935, Emmett, then twenty years old, grew reckless one day while hunting and found himself staring into the sharp-toothed mouth of a grizzly bear. He stood no chance, and was left bleeding on the forest floor, where he was found by none other than Rosalie Hale.

In Emmett Rosalie saw a bit of her past life, happiness that she'd never had, and, terrified of losing him, pushed back her own thirst for his blood and carried him to Carlisle to be saved. Through the journey, a half-conscious Emmett thought he was being carried by an angel, and his angel brought him to God. He didn't mind the pain of the transformation because his angel was with him. When the change was over, Rosalie and Carlisle were surprised to find that Emmett was not disturbed that he was a vampire; for if Rosalie, his angel, was a vampire, how bad could it be? At first he had trouble denying his thirst for human blood, but he eventually overcame it. He and Rosalie have been married numerous times throughout the years.
